The six steps on your trade report

Table

Step

What it means

1. Market priceWhat cars like yours, with similar miles and equipment, are selling for right now.
2. Plus: what adds valueService records, newer tires or brakes, a clean accident history, desirable packages.
3. Minus: what needs attentionAnything a buyer would notice: worn tires, warning lights, dents or curb-rashed wheels.
4. Minus: cost to get it ready and soldInspection, reconditioning and the cost of listing it for sale.
5. Equals your trade valueThe amount we pay for your car.
6. Minus your payoffIf you still have a loan, we subtract what you owe. What’s left is your equity.

If you owe more than the car is worth, that gap is called negative equity. We’ll show you the number and your options before you decide anything.

What “get it ready” means

Inspection, any needed service, and a full detail so your trade is ready for its next owner.

How to get the most for your trade

  • Bring both keys, the owner’s manual and any service records.
  • Clean it out. A tidy car is easier to appraise.
  • Fix small, cheap items like burned-out bulbs before you come in.
  • Have your payoff info ready if you still have a loan.

Pennsylvania also taxes your new car on the price minus your trade value, which can save you real money. Read our trade-in guide for how that works, and what to expect at your first visit.

Trade it in or sell it yourself?

Selling privately can bring a higher price, but you do all the work. Trading in is one stop. Here’s the trade-off.

  • Selling yourself: you set the price, take the photos, answer messages, meet strangers for test drives, handle payment and transfer the title.
  • Trading in: one visit, we handle the payoff and title work, and it’s done the same day you pick up your next car.
  • Sales tax: in Pennsylvania, you pay tax on the new car’s price minus your trade value. A private sale doesn’t give you that credit.

Compare your private-sale price against your trade value plus the tax savings before you decide.
